Karlberg, a two-time winner on the Asian Tour, finished fifth at the Malaysian Open earlier this year. That was his best finish of the season on the European Tour. He ran off three birdies in a 4-hole span from the seventh. After six straight pars from the 11th, Hurley grabbed a share of second with a birdie at the 17th. He parred the last to end there. Stuard played the back nine first in round one. He faltered to a bogey at the 11th, but came right back with a birdie on No. 12. Stuard drained four birdies in a row from the 14th. He tripped to another bogey at the par-5 18th. Stuard atoned for that mistake with a birdie at the first. He later birdied No. 8 to move to minus-5. Que got off to a quick start with birdies at one and two. He traded a bogey for a birdie from the fourth. He jumped to 5-under with three straight birdies to close out his opening nine. Around the turn, Que stumbled to a bogey at the 13th. He got that shot back when he birdied the 16th. Que parred the last two to share second.
