PHILADELPHIA - Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff wasnt looking for one specific way to improve his team at the 2014 NHL draft. Instead, he focused on acquiring depth, of both players and picks, casting a wide net over the two days in Philadelphia. "We had a smattering of everything," said Cheveldayoff. "We got some high skill in the first round, we got a big two-way defenceman early today, and we picked up some more skill, some grit on the wing and then we got some big centremen at the end as well." The Jets made two trades as well, sending the 159th pick and the rights to goalie Eddie Pasquale to the Washington Capitals for the 164th and 192nd picks in this years draft and a seventh-round pick in 2015. The Jets also acquired Ottawas sixth-round pick in 2015 for their 189th pick this year. "We came in with seven picks, and we ended up picking seven players," said Cheveldayoff. "We stockpiled some picks for next years draft, and we did come in saying that if we felt we were going to get our players later in the draft that we could get to see if we could move down. "We ended up acquiring an extra pick when we moved the rights to Eddie Pasquale, so we had some picks that if we could find a way to move into next year to have those assets moving forward, that was something we were looking forward to." The Jets took Jack Glover from the United States under-18 team with the 69th overall pick, their highest pick on the second day of the draft. "Hes got good size, he moves very well, and hes a good two-way defenceman," said Cheveldayoff. "Getting him in the third round is something we were very excited about, because where we had him on our list was not in that realm. When he was available we actually looked at trying to package something to move up into the later parts of the second round, but we couldnt find a match, so we were happy to get a player that we liked." "I like to push the pace," said the six-foot-three, 190-pound Glover, "and to get the puck to the forwards. I definitely think that Im a guy that relies on my skating and my vision, and I think those are my two biggest assets. Im not a big hitter, Im not a big bruiser, but I take great pride in my defensive game." With their fourth-round picks, the Jets took two players from the WHL: centre Chase De Leo from Portland and defenceman Nelson Nogier from Saskatoon. The team used its lone fifth-round pick on left wing Clinston Franklin of the USHL, and wrapped its activity in the sixth and seventh rounds with centre Pavel Kraskovsky from the Russia-Jr. team and centre/left wing Matt Ustaski from the BCHL. De Leo will join his childhood best friend and WHL rival, goalie Eric Comrie, as a Jets prospect. Comrie is the half-brother of NHL players Mike and Paul Comrie. "When we were 10 years old we had a piece of paper and we both signed it, saying that we were going to be teammates in the NHL one day," said De Leo. "Its pretty special and very exciting." Cheveldayoff likes the familiarity between the two prospects. "Its great to see the players in our organization have a bond already even before they get to development camp or training camp," said Cheveldayoff. "We are trying to build one family here, and its great to have a head start on it." He lost another fumble, but Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray still found his way to 131 yards and a touchdown on 28 touches at St. Louis. Hes leading the league in rushing attempts (75) and his 385 rushing yards is 99 more than second-place Rashad Jennings of the New York Giants. Ravens WR Steve Smith (5 REC, 101 YDS, 7 targets) is off to a great start in a new city; his 290 receiving yards ranks sixth in the league, though it seems to be coming at the expense of Torrey Smith, who has been targeted 18 times in three games (6.0 per game), down from 8.56 targets per game last season. 7. Chiefs RB Knile Davis, running in place of Jamaal Charles, had 132 yards and a a touchdown, on 32 carries, at Miami. He lost one of his two fumbles, but still a strong showing overall. In Knowshon Morenos spot with Miami, RB Lamar Miller gained 132 yards on 19 touches against Kansas City. With Doug Martin still out, Bucs RB Bobby Rainey gained 105 yards on 18 touches against Atlanta. He lost a pair of fumbles, and it was a lot of garbage time production, because in that rout, there was a lot of garbage time, but Rainey is a good option as long as Martin is sidelined. Donald Brown got the bulk of the action in the Chargers backfield, gaining 89 yards on 36 touches against Buffalo. Not very efficient and with Danny Woodhead now out with a broken fibula, Brown is even more important to the Chargers hopes. Starting in place of an injured Arian Foster, Texans RB Alfred Blue, a rookie sixth-round pick, had 88 yards on 14 touches against the Giants. Vikings RB Matt Asiata had 71 yards on 15 touches at New Orleans. While there is talk that Minnesota really likes rookie Jerick McKinnon, he had eight yards on four touches. With Ray Rice gone and Bernard Pierce (thigh) out, Justin Forsett (65 YDS, 15 touches) and Lorenzo Taliaferro (91 YDS, 1 TD, 18 carries) handled the running game for the Ravens at Cleveland. Browns RB Terrence West (41 YDS, 1 TD, 14 touches) and Isaiah Crowell (5 YDS, 1 TD, 11 carres) split the backfield duties against Baltimore in the absence of Ben Tate. 8. Eagles RB LeSean McCoy, who took a big hit against Washington Sunday, struggled on his way to 22 rushing yards on 20 carries. Through three games, McCoy has 175 rushingg yards (58.dddddddddddd3 per game), down from last seasons average of 100.4 rushing yards per game. 9. Bucs QB Josh McCown has a sprained thumb, giving Mike Glennon an opportunity next week. Vikings QB Matt Cassel broke a bone in his foot, opening the door for rookie Teddy Bridgewater (12-for-20, 150 YDS; 27 YDS, six carries) to get into the lineup. Jaguars QB Chad Henne was pulled at halftime of the blowout loss to Indianapolis, giving Blake Bortles the ball for the Jags. Bortles (14-for-24, 223 YDS, 2 TD, 2 INT) will start for Jacksonville moving forward. 10. The Miami Dolphins arent happy about the performance of Ryan Tannehill (21-for-43, 205 YDS, 1 TD) against the Chiefs, to the point that head coach Joe Philbin wouldnt assure that Tannehill will start against Oakland next week. Matt Moore is the current backup, and doesnt really offer much reason to believe hell be an improvement, even if Tannehill has struggled a bit in the early going. 11. Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch (128 YDS, 2 TD, 29 touches) had a successful grind-it-out game against Denver. The Seahawks are leaning heavily on Lynch, who has 52 of the teams 62 running back carries through the first three games. 12. Broncos WR Emmanuel Sanders (11 REC, 149 YDS, 15 targets) is becoming a solid alternative for Peyton Manning in Denver and ranks third in targets, with 33, through the first three games. Good thing, since Demaryius Thomas has 13 catches for 141 yards and a touchdown through three games. Wes Welker had six catches for 60 yards, on nine targets, at Seattle in his first appearance of the season. 13. Time-shares: Bills RB Fred Jackson (112 YDS, 1 TD, 14 touches) had a more productive day than C.J. Spiller (62 YDS, 13 touches) in the Buffalo backfield. Lions RB Reggie Bush (99 YDS, 1 TD, 18 touches) was more productive against Green Bay than he had been in the first couple weeks. Joique Bell (33 YDS, 15 carries) was decidedly less productive than he had been. Saints RB Khiry Robinson had 69 yards on 18 carries against Minnesota, while Pierre Thomas (51 YDS, 1 TD, 11 touches) was still a valuable part of the offence. 14. The Saints again gave rookie WR Brandin Cooks (8 REC, 74 YDS, 10 targets) a bigger role in the passing game than Marques Colston (2 REC, 25 YDS, 1 TD, 5 targets). 49ers WR Stevie Johnson (9 REC, 103 YDS, 9 targets) and Michael Crabtree (10 REC, 80 YDS, 11 targets) were productive in a losing effort at Arizona. 15. With QB Brian Hoyer off to a strong start, there is value in WR Andrew Hawkins (21 REC. 244 YDS) and even Miles Austin (14 REC, 115 YDS, 2 TD), who are getting the bulk of Hoyers targets. 16. Jaguars WR Allen Robinson (7 REC, 79 YDS, 10 targets) is emerging as a big part of the offence, particularly with Cecil Shorts and Marqise Lee out of the lineup the past couple weeks. 17. Titans rookie RB Bishop Sankey (70 YDS, 11 touches) got more action in a blowout loss at Cincinnati. Does that give him a better chance to sooner unseat Shonn Greene from the starting lineup? 18. Rams QB Austin Davis (30-for-42, 327 YDS, 3 TD, 2 INT) had a strong game against Dallas, even if the Rams couldnt hold the lead. That kind of production gives Davis a chance to keep Shaun Hill from returning to the starting job. 19. Steelers RB LeVeon Bell (157 YDS, 23 touches) had a monster Sunday nighter at Carolina and second-stringer LeGarrette Blount (118 YDs, 1 TD, 10 carries). 20.
