IGN Interview mit Maria Kanellis vom 16. Juni 2008
IGN: We should start with WrestleMania. How exciting was it to be working on the biggest stage in the industry? Maria: It was absolutely incredible. There were over 70,000 people there, and to be out there, you don’t realize it or understand the magnitude of it until later. I was watching the DVD and thought to myself — wow, that is 70,000 people! It was crazy.
IGN: Naturally, we need to know — what’s it like kissing Snoop Dogg?
Maria: Well, you know, he’s a legend [laughs]! He’s a legend among rappers and hip hop artists, so it was fun and exciting,
IGN: Doesn’t he have a wife?
Maria: He does, he does.
IGN: Last week on RAW, you also kissed Charlie Haas. Doesn’t he also have a wife?
Maria: Yes, he does.
IGN: We’re beginning to worry about you being a homewrecker, Maria.
Maria: No, definitely not a homewrecker, because you could ask the same thing of anyone from Sex in the City or any other show. We’re all part of the entertainment industry, and I have a boyfriend, too, and I don’t bring anyone else home!
IGN: We’re only kidding. In all seriousness, you spent most of the last year working with Santino Marella, one of the funniest men in the company. Was there ever a point where he made you crack up when you weren’t supposed to?
Maria: All the time! Oh my goodness. There were times…I remember exactly when, actually. There was a point where he was doing thrusts, and he would say… “1, 2, 3, the four”, and I had to hide behind something because I’d be cracking up.
IGN: Obviously, the last few months have been very busy and rewarding for you, going from Playboy to WrestleMania. How do you plan on topping that?
Maria: Well, whenever there’s a line, it’s to be crossed. I crossed the Playboy line, and the WrestleMania line, and now, I wanna become women’s champion. That’s first and foremost, and I’ll have to work my butt off, but I’ll put the work in. I’d love to do some movies with WWE, and I’d like to do something in the music industry. I have ideas about my own clothing line with Mickie James. My brother’s having a baby soon! My sister just made the dance team! The family comes first. As long as I can get them in and still achieve my dreams and goals, I can do them all.
IGN: When you’re asked to perform as a wrestler, who do you like to work with the most?
Maria: They’re all so different! I love working with Beth [Phoenix] because she’s extremely challenging and strong. Melina’s so creative. Mickey James is a great tag team partner. I used to take classes from her at OVW [Ohio Valley Wrestling, the then-WWE minor league affiliate]. Jillian Hall is very solid. Those are just the girls on RAW. There are many girls on Smackdown and girls I’d like to work with, Natalia being one of them, or Michelle McCool. She’d be a great tag-team partner. There’s so much talent.
IGN: Who’s your favorite wrestler to watch?
Maria: Shawn Michaels. He’s always fighting. He’s not the biggest guy in the company, so he has to use his wit a little bit more than his strength or his size. I love watching him, I really do.
IGN: Inside or outside of wrestling, who influences your personal style?
Maria: I’ve always had my own style. I don’t really get influenced by others…I might see something on the plane and think that it’s a good color combination, or some flowers, but basically, it’s my own thing — this feels great today, or, say, I shouldn’t have eaten that hamburger, so I should wear more stuff! I sow some of my own stuff, so if I have an idea, I can put it together myself.
IGN: What’s the best and worst parts about your job?
Maria: The best part is being in front of 20,000 or 70,000 people, or millions of fans watching. Putting smiles on little girl’s faces inspired by the Divas. I was doing a house show yesterday and this little girl was so excited — I talked to her a little bit, she got to ring the bell that night, she was so excited to be there. It’s great, but challenging. The travel is awesome, but it’s also awful — being away from my family is the worst part. Everything else is exciting and fun and wonderful.
IGN: What’s your least favorite airline?
Maria: Currently, Southwest. But also, United. Both of them lost one of my bags this weekend! I was traveling with two suitcases, they got checked, sent in, and they lost one on the first airline, and then I had to fly last night, and the other one got lost.
IGN: Last question: There’s a chance that you could be in Smackdown vs. Raw ‘09, the next WWE video game, as a wrestler as opposed to a backstage interviewer. What would it be like to see yourself in a video game?
